Essay 1

When you help someone you would expect them to be thankful. Not be thankful to you for one second and then rude to you the next. I work at a fast food restaurant and I've encountered some crazy customers before, but this customer I encountered made me feel unsympathetic towards the homeless. I saw him in the store often and 90% of the time that I see him he's short on cash. On the specific day that he came into the store he was with a friend. Like most of the time he was short on cash. I was a bit hesitant about giving him the food because he was short on cash yet he didn't want to take something off his order. I understood that there wasn't much he could do about it since his friend and him are both homeless, so I took the amount that he had and gave him the food. He said “Thank You” and walked away to eat the food at the table near the register counter with his friend. Around 10 minutes later he comes up to the counter to order food again and he's short on money. At that point I was mad. I told my manager not to get the food. Not only did he lie to me about not having anymore money. He had the nerve to come back up to me and try to order more food when he still doesn't have enough money. Expecting me to just give him the food again. When my manager and I confronted him about the lie he started cussing us out then there was this huge argument.

Think into the future about Mae Mobley. What do you think she will have to say about her childhood?

If Miss Leefolt keeps treating Mae Mobley the way she is now. I think that Mae Mobley will say that she considers Aibileen more like her mother than Miss Leefolt. I think that Mae Mobley is going to be somewhat like Skeeter.

In Chapters 7 & 8, we learn of Skeeter's idea to record the maids' stories. For essay #1, you'll tell a story of your own. To help you decide on a topic, begin making a list of possible stories to tell.

Write a 1-2 sentence summary of a life experience of each of the following types. You'll notice that the ladies in The Help, have had many of these experiences. Draw your inspiration from the reading.

In-Class Writing 9/13

Compare and contrast Aibileen and Minny's relationship with Skeeter and Hilly's relationship.

Aibileen and Minny are really close friends they are able to be themself when they are together. They help each other through the tough times and are there for one another. For the most part they are able to tell each other everything.


Skeeter and Hilly are also really close friends.





How expectations for women have changed or stayed the same.

I think that the expectation for women to get married and have babies has stayed the same throughout the years. There is also the expectation for women to dress up nice and look pretty. The expectation for the women back then in The Help was to go to college and find someone to marry where as now the expectation has changed to getting a degree and finding a carrer not just going to college to find someone to marry. There is also the expectation for women to know how to do housework whereas in The Help they weren't expected to know how to do these things.

Homework #2

1. One of the central conflicts in this chapter is between Hilly and Skeeter. Using examples from the text, describe Hilly and Skeeter’s relationship. Then write about something similar (betrayal, growing apart, or disagreement) that you have experienced with a friend.

Hilly and Skeeter used to be really close they “have been best friends since Power Elementary”. Skeeter’s favorite photograph was of her, Hilly, and Elizabeth sitting “jammed together, shoulder to shoulder.” Even though there was no one around “We sat close because we were close”. The relationship between them became a little rocky when Hilly threatened to throw Skeeter out of the League even though they were really close friends. Skeeter was hurt by how easily her best friend casted her aside. I used to hang out a lot with my best friend since elementary school, but as we grew older our interests and such were completely different. We stopped hanging out with each other as much and started hanging out with people that had the same interests.

The dialogue of the book is written in a way that the reader would be able to get a sense of how they speak. I think that it's interesting that she wrote the book this way. It puts me in the shoes of the characters.
